Polaris sits at the end of the Little Dipper’s handle. It is the current polestar. For centuries, navigators have used it to find true north. But the star you see tonight is not the North Star forever.
Earth’s axis wobbles like a spinning top. This motion is called precession. Because of it, Polaris will align perfectly with the north celestial pole around the year 2100. After that, it drifts away. In a few hundred years, it will be several degrees off from the pole. Other stars will take its place as the guiding light.
A Triple Star System
Polaris is not a single star. It is a triple star system. The brightest component is itself a spectroscopic binary. It orbits a companion star every 30 years. This companion is too faint to see with the naked eye.
The primary star is also a Cepheid variable. Its brightness fluctuates with a period of about four days. These changes are too subtle for human eyes to detect. The apparent visual magnitude remains steady at 2.00.
Why Polaris Matters
Distance measurement is tricky in space. Astronomers need a reliable ruler. Polaris helps build that ruler. It is the closest Cepheid variable to Earth. We can measure its distance precisely. That measurement is about 447.6 light-years away.
This data calibrates other cosmic distance methods. Without Polaris, our understanding of the universe’s scale would be less accurate. It anchors our measurements. It proves that even our most familiar stars hide complex secrets.
Why do we care about a star that changes brightness so little? Because it helps us measure the rest of the sky. It is a tool. It is a landmark. It is more than just a dot in the dark.
