Almost every fungus in existence relies on spores to survive. These tiny, single-celled units are the primary method of reproduction. They allow fungi to spread widely and ensure the species continues.
Fungi create spores through two main pathways. Some use asexual methods to produce them directly. Others rely on sexual reproduction to form them indirectly. The process often involves the fragmentation of the mycelium. It can also happen inside specialized structures like sporangia or gametangia.
Movement varies among these reproductive cells. Primitive fungi often produce spores with flagella. These can swim through moisture. Most spores, however, are nonmotile. They drift on air currents or hitch rides on animals.
When a spore lands in a suitable location, it germinates and grows to form a new fungal individual.
The journey ends when the spore finds the right conditions. Once it settles, germination begins. The single cell expands. It develops into a new fungal organism. This cycle repeats endlessly.
