It happened. Three times.
Kathryn Bigelow broke the seal first. In 2010, she took home the statue for The Hurt Locker. That was historic. She became the first woman in Oscar history to win best director. The gap between then and now felt infinite. It wasn’t until 2021 that another woman climbed that same podium. Chloé Zhao won for Nomadland. Then Jane Campion followed in 2022 for The Power of the Dog.
You might think they are alone at the top. They aren’t.
Look at the nominations. Sofia Coppola was there for Lost in Translation in 2003. Greta Gerwig showed up for Lady Bird in 2017. More recently, Justine Triet earned a nod for Anatomy of a Fall in 2023.
So why does this matter?
Because for over a century, the category was a boys’ club. The fact that three women have won changes the narrative. It proves the Academy can, and will, recognize female directors when the work demands it.
But here’s the thing.
Just because they won doesn’t mean the door is wide open. It’s cracked. Wide open? Not yet.
How many more will it take?
We don’t know. But we know the names now. Bigelow. Zhao. Campion.
And the ones who came close.
Coppola. Gerwig. Triet.
They’re all part of the same story. A story that’s still being written.
