It is very crispy. It is semi-transparent. And it has a faint pine scent.
Resin is a substance that behaves strangely when the temperature changes. It becomes sticky when heated. When it cools, it breaks down. You may have come across it without knowing its name. A violin bow requires rosin. Dance shoes use it to provide traction. The stage floor relies on it to prevent slipping. But this material goes far beyond the concert hall.
It is used in soap. It’s inside your varnish. It’s on the wax seal of a letter you may never send.
Two main types of resin
Not all resin is created equal. The difference is in the extraction method from the tree.
Pine rosin is the residue that remains after the distillation of pine oleoresin. That volatile component? Turpentine. When you remove it, the pine resin remains.
Wood rosin involves a different process. Obtained by solvent extraction from pine trunks. It is usually dark in color. They have different histories and different chemical properties.
Both types are equally widely used in industrial applications, but their origin is important for quality control.
Where to use
Resin and its chemical derivatives are the main products. They are not always obvious, but they are everywhere.
Manufacturers use them to make soap. They are essential in soap. Sealing waxes depend on them. Needed for printing ink. Rosin is in the composition of desiccants, paper glues, adhesives and binders. Flux is used to clean metal surfaces. It is included in gloss oils for paints, etc. Barrel pitch is another use.
Then there is the friction aspect.

Without resin, the violin bow slips on the strings. There is no sound. The dancer slips and falls. Simple chemical reactions make performance possible.
The geography of Manila
Resin cannot be easily dug everywhere. Source trees are important.
In Europe, it is primarily obtained from pine, Pinus pinaster. France dominates the region, especially the Gironde and Landes departments.
Moving north. Red pine, P. sylvestris, served as the main source. Although there are other local pine species in European countries, these two pines are the main sources.
On the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, the United States has its own ecosystem. Longleaf pine, P. palustris and loblolly pine, P. taeda are sources from the South Atlantic and Eastern Gulf states.
Why is this important now?
We live in a world that requires adhesives, lubricants and friction modifiers. Rosin provides all three functions depending on how it is processed.
It is not just a by-product of the turpentine industry. It is an independent product with special physical characteristics that are difficult to imitate. The smell of pine is unique. Stickiness can be controlled. Easy to handle due to fragility
