Between 1200 and 1700 AD, the Rapa Nui people quarried approximately 950 moai from the volcanic rock of Rano Raraku crater. These monolithic figures, some reaching 33 feet tall and weighing up to 86 tons, represent deified ancestors. The statues were transported distances of up to 11 miles, a logistical feat that continues to baffle researchers.
Theories of Movement

Roughly 400 moai remain unfinished in the quarry, while another 62 lie abandoned along the transportation routes. The reasons for these abandoned statues are unclear.
