Saving the UK’s Vanishing Rainforests: A Campaign in the Lake District

A dedicated group of volunteers is launching a fundraising drive to protect and restore a rare ecosystem that is rapidly disappearing from the British landscape: the temperate rainforest.

The Mission in the Rusland Valley

The “Friends of the Lake District” are currently focusing their efforts on two neighboring woodlands located in Cumbria’s Rusland Valley. These woods are significant because they possess “rainforest indicators”—specific biological markers that prove the presence of a temperate rainforest microclimate.

To support this conservation work, the group is participating in the Big Give’s Earth Raise campaign during Earth Week (April 22–29). This initiative offers a unique financial advantage: donations made during this period will be doubled through match funding, providing a critical boost to their restoration projects.

A Shrinking Natural Heritage

The scale of the loss facing these ecosystems is staggering. While temperate rainforests once blanketed approximately 20% of the UK, they have been reduced to less than 1% of their former extent.

These forests are not merely collections of trees; they are complex, high-humidity environments that function as biological hubs. Their sheltered microclimates support a specialized web of life, including:
Mosses and lichens
Diverse fungi species
Unique ferns

Many of these species are highly specialized and can rarely be found anywhere else outside these remaining fragments of Cumbrian woodland.

Threats to the Ecosystem

Despite their ecological importance, these “mini cities” of biodiversity are under constant pressure. Local volunteers and land managers highlight three primary threats that jeopardize the survival of these ancient landscapes:

  1. Non-native species: Invasive plants can outcompete indigenous flora, disrupting the delicate balance of the forest floor.
  2. Disease: Pathogens can devastate specific tree species, altering the structure of the canopy.
  3. Climate change: Shifting weather patterns threaten the consistent humidity and temperature levels required for these specialized species to thrive.

“Every tree, rocky outcrop, and dry-stone wall is like a mini city,” says volunteer Marion Brown. “But like much of the remaining small fragments… these woods are under threat.”

Why This Matters

The struggle in the Rusland Valley is a microcosm of a much larger environmental challenge. As temperate rainforests shrink, we lose not just trees, but unique genetic reservoirs and specialized habitats that cannot be easily replaced once lost. Protecting these fragments is a race against time to preserve the UK’s biological history.

The campaign aims to secure the funding necessary to defend these rare habitats against environmental pressures and ensure that these ancient landscapes continue to support their unique wildlife.
